Fortnight is a rare opportunity for students to work and learn in a forest, especially a well-preserved forest of the Northwest. In fact, for many campers Fortnight is the first extended stay beyond the city limits!
There is no better way to learn to appreciate something than to work alongside it, including nature. Climbing, sawing, hammering, and hiking amongst the hemlock, cedars, and alders in Smoke Farm’s hills, students learn to see and respect the beauty of their natural environment.
We bring this appreciation back around to the work we do. Students are taught about sustainable building and how to integrate their lives with the environment around them. In order to build the perfect tree house, one must first know how to find the perfect tree, and understand how to keep that tree healthy for future generations.
